Alexa Skills are voice-driven capabilities that enhance the functionality of Amazon's Alexa-enabled devices.

This article guides you through enabling, launching, and managing Live365 Single Station Alexa Skills, which are included free of charge starting with the Broadcast 2 package and up.

Supported Devices

The Live365 Single Station Alexa Skills are compatible with a variety of Alexa-enabled devices, including:

  • Amazon Echo: Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus, etc.
  • Third-party Alexa devices: Devices from other manufacturers with Alexa integration.

Note: Ensure that your Alexa device is connected to the internet and linked to your Amazon account before proceeding.

How to Enable the Skill

Before your audience can listen, they must enable your station’s custom skill on their account:

  1. Begin by saying, "Alexa, enable Skill."
  2. Alexa will prompt you to specify which skill you want to enable. Say the name of the Live365 skill that you wish to enable. For example, Classic Rock Radio."
  3. Once confirmed, the skill is tied to your account and ready to play.

How to Launch the Skill

After enabling the skill, you can easily launch it by using the following invocation:

  • "Alexa, play [station name]."

For example, if you enabled the "Classic Rock Radio" skill, you would say, "Alexa, play Classic Rock Radio."

How to Stop the Skill

To halt playback and return your device to its default state at any time, simply say:

  • "Alexa, stop."

Alexa Invocation Limitations

The "invocation" is the exact phrase listeners must pronounce to launch your skill. Amazon enforces strict architectural rules regarding what can and cannot be used as an invocation name. Keep these rules in mind when setting up your Single Station Alexa Skill:

  • Connecting Words: You cannot use connecting words like “and”, “or”, or “if” in your skill name.
  • Banned Terms: You cannot reference the word ”TV” anywhere in your station/skill name.
  • The "The" Rule: If your skill name begins with "The", it must be followed by at least two other words. (The grammatical article “the” is not counted as a standalone word by Amazon's system).
  • Abbreviations: If your station name uses an abbreviation, include a period and a space between the letters. For example, Kradio must be formatted as "k. Radio".
  • Numbers: Numbers must be fully spelled out using letters. For example, 97 must be written out as "ninety seven".
  • Pronunciation & Dialects:Keep your phrase clear and concise. Regional dialects, accents, or complex phrasings may cause Amazon’s servers to misinterpret a listener's voice request.
Note: It's important to note that Alexa invocations should be clear and concise. Avoid using overly complex or lengthy phrases, as this may result in Alexa misinterpreting your request.

Troubleshooting: Live365 and Amazon Alexa+

Amazon’s next-generation, AI-powered assistant – Alexa+ – is currently in an Early Access testing phase.

Because Alexa+ is still in active development, some broadcasters utilizing custom Alexa Skills have reported functionality issues on devices running this updated software.

How to disable Alexa+ for better stability:

If you or your listeners experience issues running your custom skill on an Alexa+-enabled device, you can temporarily opt out of the Early Access version to restore standard functionality.

  1. From an Alexa Device: Speak directly to the device and say, “Alexa, exit Alexa+” or “Alexa, disable Alexa+”
  2. Without an Alexa Device: Alexa+ cannot be disabled via the Alexa App or Alexa.com. If you do not have physical access to the device, you must contact Amazon Support directly online or by phone at 1-888-280-4331 to request to have Alexa+ removed from your Amazon subscription.
